The collection consists of copied Civil War letters sent by Kiser to his wife and children, dating from 1861-1862, with miscellaneous additional materials. Materials were organized by Kiser's great-granddaughter, Frances Alma Newkirk Reber.

James Preston Kiser was born Feb. 8, 1838 in Ohio. He married Catherine M. Lonberger in Oct. 1856, by whom he had three children. The Kisers lived in Tippecanoe County (Ind.) by 1854, whence James Kiser was mustered into service in late 1861. He served as Captain in Company G of the 40th Indiana Regiment, and died at Nashville, Tennessee, April 1, 1862. From the description of Letters 1861-1872. (Lincoln Library).
